Five Divisions,
One Building

The company is organised into five divisions, each led by an experienced manager and staffed with trained technicians rather than general labour.

The machines set the tolerance. The people decide everything the tolerance does not cover: whether a rope termination reads right, whether a coat has flashed under raking light, whether a cushion will still sit square after a season outside. A programme cannot hold those judgements. Someone who has made ten thousand of them can.

It has a commercial consequence worth saying plainly. It makes us slower and dearer than a pure assembly plant on simple, high-volume product. It makes us considerably better on everything else.
